Benefits Of Talking Therapy

Introduction

“Talking therapy gave me power to talk about my childhood traumas and now those feelings don’t disturb me anymore”

Counselling is a talking therapy that involves a trained therapist listening to you and helping you find ways to deal with emotional issues.

Sometimes the term “counselling” is used to refer to talking therapies in general, but counselling is also a type of therapy in its own right.

WHAT CAN COUNSELLING HELP WITH?

Counselling can help you cope with:

•a mental health condition, such as depression, anxiety or an eating disorder

•an upsetting physical health condition

•a difficult life event, such as a bereavement, a relationship breakdown or work-related stress

•difficult emotions – for example, low self-esteem or anger

•other issues, such as sexual identity

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM COUNSELLING

Sometimes it’s easier to talk to a stranger than to relatives or friends. During talking therapy, you’ll be encouraged to talk about your feelings and emotions with a trained therapist, who’ll listen and support you without judging or criticising.

The therapist can help you gain a better understanding of your feelings and thought processes, and find your own solutions to problems. But they won’t usually give advice or tell you what to do.

Counselling can take place:

•face to face

•in a group

•over the phone

•by email

It can take a number of sessions before you start to see progress, but you should gradually start to feel better with the help and support of your therapist.  Source: NHS

Derman Mental Health Services offer counselling in Turkish and English language to Kurdish, Turkish, Cypriot and Turkish speaking East European and Asian ethnic Turkish communities.

“Derman have always impressed me with their willingness to work with very complex patients, managing a considerable degree of risk. I believe their approach is very person centred, and I know they have been able to work flexibly and adaptably with couples, families and their wider support systems, with a recovery focused approach.” Dr Emma Janes, Consultant Psychiatrist – ELFT, said:

DERMAN‛S IAPT (IMPROVİNG ACCESS TO PSYCHOLOGICAL THERAPIES) SERVICE CLIENTS‛ RECOVERY RATE WAS 73.45%. DERMAN EXCEEDED THEIR TARGET RECOVERY RATE OF 50%. DERMAN‛S RECOVERY RATE IS HIGHER THAN THE NATIONAL IAPT AVERAGES DURİNG 2018-19.

33 years old female client: “All my life, I was feeling guilty, as I had been constantly blamed for and criticised first by my caregiver, then by my husband. Since my early childhood I developed the feelings of confusion, low self-esteem, sadness, frustration and anger. I started feeling valued during my counselling sessions in Derman. I had the chance to share my feelings being listened to, respected and enabled me trust myself. Now I feel self confident and I can have my own imaginations and plans for the future.”

35 years old male client: “I feel at home when I come to Derman to see my counsellor. It‛s a safe and secure environment.”

42 years old Turkish woman:

“The counselling gave me power to talk about my childhood traumas and now those feelings won‛t disturbed me anymore.“

63 years old Turkish Cypriot Female:

“Initially I thought these therapy sessions will not be helpful. I was hopeless, I only came because my son asked me to. Now I can see that it has moved me forward. I have learned about things that have reduced my symptoms. For example, the use of allocating ‘worry time‛ has been the main thing that has made me feel better. It‛s been like the remedy to my depression.”
