Derman’s Advice Service is well known, professional and an in demand service This service is instrumental in radically reducing poverty within The Kurdish, Turkish, Cypriot Turkish, and EU Turkish communities in Hackney, London. Language/literacy skills and knowledge of the welfare benefits system are the main barriers for many people from those communities.
What we offer?
We provide free, independent, impartial and confidential information, guidance and advice to all disadvantaged and excluded people within Kurdish and Turkish communities in Hackney.
The service offers a wide range of advice levels, from support for letter reading to filling complex forms on welfare rights, debt and housing such as:
- Universal Credit
- Jobseekers Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
- Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
- Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
- Housing benefit
- Winter Fuel Payments
- Pension Credit
- Any Other Benefits Entitlements
We also take action on behalf of clients in order to move their cases on the Appeal Tribunal service.
Many people with mental health conditions as well as language and lack of knowledge of benefit system barriers can find it difficult to understand and access the complex benefits system and to get the support they need. At Derman, we strive to ensure that everyone with experience of mental health difficulties or any other barriers has access to support and that they are treated fairly and with respect.
Who can benefit from this service?
The Welfare Rights Advice Service is for Kurdish, Turkish, Turkish Cypriot and Eastern European Turkish people who are residents and/or registered with a Hackney GP.
How can the service be used or accessed by clients?
Our FREE Advice Sessions are run on an appointment system.
To make an appointment and/or to get advice on the phone, please call our advice worker on 020 7739 7026 on FRIDAYS only between 9.30 am and 12 pm.
We provide our service in 3 different health settings (Well Street Surgery, Somerford Grove Practice and Shoreditch Park Surgery) in Hackney and at Derman Office on varied days and times of the week.
Please note: Our premises is not disabled accessible – please let us know if you or your client cannot manage stairs and we will arrange to see you at an alternative venue if possible.
A Note on Confidentiality
All those employed at Derman perform their duties within a framework of confidentiality. Personal information given to GPs, other professionals and staff by users will not be passed on to anyone outside of the service without the individual’s consent. The only exceptions to this policy are where it is reasonably believed that the health and safety of an individual(s) is at risk and/or where we are legally obliged to disclose material, i.e. in the case of child protection and drug trafficking. Every effort is made to discuss this with the client beforehand.
